Position- Team Leader (Clean Products/Sustainability)

Duty Summary- As a senior officer, I manage a team of people including scientists and technical staff who focus on the developement and testing of integrated systems of crop management with an Intergrated Pest Management (IPM) emphasis. The objectives of this position are to increase the sustainable economic value of Tasmania’s vegetable and other high value related industries by undertaking industry development and demonstration programs, and the provision of high level advice on IPM to the cropping industries and the State Government.

--------------------------------------

Period- 1995 to 2000

Employer- Department of Primary Industries, Water, & Environment

Position- Section Leader (Weed Management)/ Principal Weed Management Officer

Duty Summary- This position was primarily a management/co-ordinating role for both the development, administration, and leading of the DPIWE weed management program in which I supervised five officers. I was responsible for high level technical advice on weed management issues through the writing of Ministerials, advice on herbicide registration issues, policy development regarding weed issues in the State, and other such duties on a daily basis. I had a major involvement in the initiation and development of the DPIWE weed management program to facilitate the Tasmanian Weed Management Strategy recommendations, including the development of operational plans and working budgets. I have assisted the Branch Manager with administrative procedures relating to weeds.  In addition during this time I facilitated community groups in the formation of regional weed strategies, and represented DPIWE on a number of regional/topical working groups relating to weed management. As Australian Weeds Committee representative, I dealt with a number of State and National weed issues.  I authored State legislation relating to pest plant declaration (Weed Management Act 1999) and its supporting regulations. I was responsible for all facets of the legislative development, Parliamentary transitions and implementation. During this period I was seconded on a part-time basis to assist in the development of a Statewide water licensing system/web-based water register as part of the Council of Australian Government reforms to the water industry.

Period- 1992 to 1995

Employer- Department of Primary Industry, Tasmania

Position- Weed Scientist

Duty Summary- Based at the Stoney Rise Government Centre, my position required me to work without direct supervision at a high level of professional responsibility. I designed a range of weeds research projects. During my appointment, I took pre-existing projects to successful completion and have successfully negotiated both industry and Commonwealth Government funding for new research projects. I am experienced in the extension of both project findings and technical advice to all sectors of the agricultural industry and to the general public. I am familiar with all sectors of Tasmania’s agricultural industry.  Research projects ranged from the development of control methods for both wild poppies and amaranthus, to the development of low herbicide input weed management systems, to a cooperative venture with local agribusiness and an interstate software company to produce computer software able to provide herbicide recommendations for crop use in Tasmania. I have organised and run field days and workshops, and presented research findings at international conference and grower meeting level necessitating keenly developed communication skills. The writing of proposals, reports, and evaluating herbicide registration submissions have all formed a core part of the administrative aspects of this position. I have been required to supervise and manage externally funded technical staff working on the projects I have designed. A high level of personal development resulted from my appointment to this position with training in presentation , negotiation, and management skills.  I have developed a network of contacts with national and international weed scientists through my project work and professional committee positions.

--------------------------------------

Period-  1987 to 1992

Employer- Department of Primary Industry, Tasmania

Position- Technical Officer

Duty Summary- This position involved the evaluation of newly introduced pasture species in Tasmania. It also required the design and conduct of evaluation trials for lupins, lentils, chickpeas, vetch, and grasspeas. I established experiments to provide data for a crop growth development model for lupins in Tasmania (this later formed the basis of my Masters degree project). In 1991, Tasmania's first official lupin cultivar recommendations and cultural notes were released based on my experiments. I was also involved in research to determine if high cadmium levels occurred in vegetables in Tasmania.

--------------------------------------

Period- 1984 to 1986

Employer- Department of Agriculture, Victoria

Position- Technical Assistant

Duty Summary- Based at the Potato Research Station at Toolangi, I was part of the Potato Crisping Research Group (Plant Research Division). The group's aim was to improve yield quality of potato crops.  My duties involved laboratory and field work. I was also responsible for grower liaison and extension in maintaining a water budget, via neutron probe, for 25 growers.
