AB's REVIEW: Anticipation was high at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on the evening of 1 February 2007. At 7:45pm, seats were filling fast as fans crowded into the stadium anticipating an 8:00pm start on the dot. Well we didn't see Roger until closer to 8:30pm but experiencing the atmosphere, studying the image of the giant whisky bottle, radio and model aeroplane on the screen, listening to atmospheric 'floydian sound effect' tunes and breathing in the smoky air was pretty entertaining. First activity on stage was the clip on screen coming to life with a large hand stretching out to change radio stations. Then the lights dimmed to the first chords of 'In the Flesh'. Roger and his entourage of 10 musicians then proceeded to play a string of Floyd favourites with some of Rogers solo stuff thrown in. The concert consisted of three parts with the first part being a collection of favourite tracks followed by a 20 minute intermission. Good opportunity to join the crush out the front to grab some refreshments before the second part consisting of the full rendition of Dark Side of the Moon. Part three was the encore which was effectively 'The Wall' revisited with 'Happiest Days of Our Lives", Another Brick in The Wall Prt 2, "Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home, and Comfortably Numb.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Ever the consumate professional, unlike a lot of artists on stage, Roger and the band sounded as good-or better- than their recordings. I thought Roger had an excellent interaction with the audience which was an appreciative one. Overtly political? Yes with messages in the songs emphasised by relevant visuals on the backing screens. 'Bring the boys back home' had a deal of currency! Pyro effects-Wall of Sound-flying props? Yes-Ok maybe not as 'in your face' as the Pink Floyd- but undeniably impressive giving the show extra thump. Flying astronauts (...I'm afraid Dave...etc) and I'm glad the pig on the wing wasn't forgotten-daubed with some pretty relevant slogans that struck a chord with the audience. Highlights for me? Hard to choose-the whole thing was a fantastic experinece and I just wish I had bought tickets for the following night. But if I am pressed:
1. Encore set-talk about finishing with a flourish. No wonder it was a universal standing ovation.
2. Leaving Beirut- great story with clever support graphics and a powerful message that once again undeniably hit home.
3. Visuals and atmosphere-maybe its because I haven't been to a big show for a while but the stage effects, music and thousands of energetic fans combined for a memorable experience.
All in all thanks to Roger for bringing his talent, band, and messages to the shores of Oz where us antipodeans can get a chance to see the Legend live.
