Hilda and I undertook 18 weeks of travel from May to September 2002.  We travelled from east to west  using Qantas around-the-world fares.  Modes of travel included air, bus, train, bicycles, car...and lots of hiking.  This page is a glimpse into the journey with just a few of many hundreds of images,  a summary review of our accommodation, and some interesting travel links.  Please note comments regards accommodation and venues are purely our own thoughts based on our experiences.  You might find things very different.  But that's the fun!

Highland Gardens Hotel

(Hollywood)

www.highlandgardens.com What a great place to stay in Hollywood.  One block from the centre of Hollywood.  comfortable A/C rooms.  Once the centre of  Hollywood stardom this hotel carries the memories of the real Hollywood of the past. Really helpful and friendly staff.  Excellent value for money.

Premier Inn

(San Diego)

www.premierinns.com Located not far from  Seaworld but a hike from the city centre.  Basic accommodation-clean and comfortable.  Reasonable value for money.

Peru

Casa de Campo Hostal

(Cuzco)

www.tesar.com.pe/amauta

A real gem.  Fantastic accommodation with million dollar views over the spectacular Cuzco.  Coca tea on arrival is a must.  Rooms are basic and very comfortable.  Exceptional value for money.  Friendly and genuine staff.  When next in Cuzco stay there!

Gringo Bills

(Aguas Calientas)

www.machupicchugringobills.com

In the same style as Casa de Campo.  Good views over the town square with the hustle and bustle of adventurers eager for their visit to the lost Inca city.  Basic accommodation.  Ultra-economical.  Top spot to stay.

Brazil

DeBrett Hotel

(Rio de Janeiro)

www.debret.com

Our second stay at this unassuming friendly hotel centrally situated on Avenue Atlantica and overlooking Copecabana beach.  DeBrett is exceptional value-for-money with friendly and helpful staff.  We look forward to our next stay there.

Denmark

Cab-Inn

(Copenhagen)

www.cabinn.com

First off, hotel accommodation in Copenhagen is incredibly expensive-at least for us Australians.  The Cab-Inn hotels offer clean accommodation with private facilities in the format of a ship's cabin-including size!  Good value but not suitable for long stays as your quarters are pretty cramped!

Ceresvej 10 B&B

(Copenhagen)

No URL Located in Frederiksberg about a 30 minute walk from central Copenhagen, this B&B consists of a comfortable room with shared facilities.

Sweden Hotel Ahlstrom

(Lund)

No URL Tucked away on a sidestreet only a few minutes walk to the town centre with its array of bars and street cafes.  This little hotel falls into the budget category.  Small cosy rooms with shared facilities.  Friendly staff but reception only attended for a short time in the morning and evening.

Basic Hotel

(Upsala)

www.basichotel.com

Conveniently located.  Very high security with  rooms protected by a series of inner doors with electronic locks!   Comfortable, albeit a little sterile.  Excellent value.

Hotel Bema

(Stockholm)

No URL
Finland Hotel Pumpulienkeli

(Forssa)

www.hotellipumpulienkeli.fi

You don't need to pronounce the name.  This is a great little hotel at a reasonable cost.  Comfortable rooms, nice bar and restaurant and helpful staff. Centrally located in Forssa.

(Helsinki)

www.hotelarthur.fi
The Netherlands Papendal Sports Centre Hotel

(Arnhem)

www.papendal.nl

Hotel Prinsenhof

(Amsterdam)

www.prinsenhoff.com Housed in a typical Amsterdam house.  This means you will regret that heavy pack when you make your way up the stairs to your room.  Basic but good value.

Hotel The Crown

(Amsterdam)

www.hotelthecrown.com With a mindset that Amsterdam is expensive this place is really basic and seemingly expensive.  Located right in the famous red-light district provides for interesting surrounds.

France Hotel Saloman

(Paris)

No URL Located a couple of blocks from Notre Dame, this establishment emphasises the meaning of budget in Paris.  A place you wouldn't necessarily choose to stay but when you've stuffed up your hotel booking,  its better than a wet Parisian street!

Hotel France Louvre

(Paris)

Lovely homely hotel.  Really pleasant staff.  Terrific breakfast and a few minutes walk to all the main attractions.  easy Metro access.

Ibis Nice Centre

(Nice)

Great location.  easy walking distance of the Nice rail station.

Italy Hotel Europa

(Florence)

www.webhoteleuropa.com Just around the corner from the Duomo, Hotel Europa is housed in a typical Florentine building.  Comfortable, cool and quiet with lovely hosts.  Great value for money.

Milana Hotel

(Rome)

Really close to the station and not that far from ancient Rome.  Clean, comfortable, and good value.

Greece

Astor Hotel

(Athens)

www.astorhotel.gr The internet is a great tool to book accommodation but every once and awhile you strike a real bargain- we did with Astor.  Very comfortable hotel with glorious views of the Acropolis and balcony dining in view of the Parthenonon.  Highly recommended.

England

Rothamsted Manor

(Harpenden)

No URL Student accommodation in a Manor House. Linked to Rothamsted Research
Acacia Guest House

(Coventry)

No URL B&Bs are really a great form of accommodation when travelling the UK.  Acacia was typical.  Small, cosy, and comfortable rooms with a traditional cooked English breakfast.

Abbey Court & Westpoint Hotel

(London)

www.abbey.com Is London expensive?  You better believe it!  This place is really cheap by London standards and I guess you get what you pay for.  Reasonable location with some neat little Greek restaurants nearby.

Lady Anne Middleton's Hotel

(York)

No URL Not cheap but very comfortable.  Great location.  The building used to be a hospital about 300 years ago so its pretty historic too.

Golden Cross Hotel

(Shrewsbury)

No URL Classic English pub accommodation.  This pub dated to 1428 located in the centre of Shrewsbury. Basic accommodation but really nice and clean with friendly hosts...and heaps of history.

Stafford Court Hotel

No URL Pub accommodation but we were given a flat in a nearby house.  Nice accommodation and jovial hosts.

Scotland Kerrann B&B

(Stirling)

No URL If visiting Edinburgh in August don't forget it is Festival time and don't even try to get accommodation in town.  However Stirling is not that far away and the Kerrann B&B offers exceptional quality accommodation and service at a reasonable price.  Highly recommended.

Philippines City Garden Hotel

(Manila)

Really nice hotel located in Ermita.  Excellent value for money with friendly, helpful, and attentive staff.  Sad to leave.
